This weekend, the former presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) e Fernando Henrique Cardoso placeholder image (PSDB) signed a letter against the opening of trade in Mercosur, in which they criticize minister Paulo Guedes and defend the position of the Argentine government. This is because the current Ministry of Economy, headed by Guedes, is negotiating with the other Mercosur countries to reduce the bloc’s import taxes. Thus, nations that do not belong to the group would pay less for products purchased from countries that belong to Mercosur. A member of the Brazilian economic team, the special secretary for Productivity, Employment and Competitiveness, Carlos Da Costa, used social media on Monday, 7th, to criticize the letter signed by Lula and FHC.

“Lula and FHC, who destroyed the companies with a Brazil cost of R$1.5 trillion reais a year, accept the drowned man’s embrace and protest against the opening of trade that we have begun. The opening, dialogued with our productive sector and chosen at the polls, will be gradual, predictable and simultaneous with the reduction of the Brazil Cost. We have already reduced the Brazil Cost by 10%, we will reduce the rates by 10% – a 25% tariff, for example, drops to 22.5%”, he said. Also according to the secretary, the reduction in tariffs represents a great opportunity for the country’s economic recovery. “It is the right measure to strengthen the competitiveness of our industries and enable the price drop expected by consumers. By the end of the government, we intend to complete the implementation of measures with a potential to reduce by 2/3 these obstacles that 23 years of delay produced. Brazil is growing, and they will not be able to stop our prosperity”, he concluded.

The letter signed by the country’s former presidents analyzes that the economic measure proposed by the Paulo Guedes can harm the integrity of Mercosur. “We agree with the position of the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, that this is not the time for unilateral tariff reductions by the Mercosur, without any benefit in favor of the bloc’s exports. We also agree that it is necessary to maintain the integrity of the bloc, so that all its members can fully develop their industrial and technological capacities and participate in a dynamic and creative way in the contemporary world economy”, records the statement by Lula and FHC.
