There are only 10 ETA prisoners in prisons far from the Basque Country

The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions (IIPP) has ordered the transfer of three ETA members to prisons near the Basque Country, so that there are only 10 inmates of the gang held in centers far from the Basque Country, eight of them in Andalusia and two in Castellón.

Besides of transfer of these three condemned, Penitentiary Institutions has ordered the transfer of Soledad Iparraguirre, alias Anboto, an inmate in the Madrid I women’s prison for judicial reasons and as a preventive prisoner, to the Álava prison.

France handed over Anboto to Spain in 2019 to be tried for twelve pending proceedings and he remained in the Avila prison in Brieva until he was moved to Madrid I to facilitate their appearances in pending trials in the National High Court.

The Madrid I Treatment Board has decided to transfer him to Álava alleging his family ties.

Last April, Anboto sat on the bench of the National Court for the seventh time since France handed her over and returned to appeal to “dialogue” to “not leave the door open for a similar situation to recur”.

One of the three ETA transferred is Jose Ignacio Cruchaga, a member of the Barcelona command and accused of the murder of the mayor of the PP in Sant Adriá del Besós (Barcelona) José Luis Ruiz Casado in September 2000.

Cruchaga will go on to serve a sentence from the Almería prison to the León prison and will comply with the three quarters of his grief in July 2023.

He entered prison on January 16, 2001 and is serving a 30-year cumulative sentence for the crimes of attack, murder, homicide, ravages and fires, collaboration with an armed gang, robbery, forgery, attack on authority, possession of prohibited weapons and injuries, according to Prisons.

Meanwhile, the ETA Alberto Viedma Morillas, convicted of the murders of UPN councilor Tomás Caballero, father of the current president of the Foundation for the Victims of Terrorism, and of Second Lieutenant Francisco Casanova, will also be transferred from the Almeria prison to the Topas prison (Salamanca).

Incarcerated since March 4, 2002 for serve a cumulative sentence 30 years old, he will turn three-quarters in November 2022.

For his part, the ETA Francisco Ruiz Romero He will be transferred from Murcia II prison to León. He entered prison on February 25, 2002 and is serving a cumulative sentence of 30 years and 15 days for attacks, murder, storage and arms trafficking and injuries.

Ruiz Romero He was the author of the shots that killed Tomás Caballero in May 1998 and was also convicted of placing a limpet bomb in the car of a soldier, which was an unsuccessful attack.

According to Prisons, he will serve three-quarters of the sentence in December 2025.

Criticism of the Victims of Terrorism Association

One more week, the Association Victims of Terrorism (AVT) has once again censured the Government of Pedro Sánchez for end the policy of dispersal of ETA prisoners.

In a statement, the AVT has also referred to the statements of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in which it indicated that it was working to punish the tributes and greetings to ETA as an administrative offense, with the corresponding sanction.

“This is something that AVT has been requesting for a long time, something that we hope will become a reality as soon as possible and do not remain on wet paper“, concludes the association.
