How prepared is the general public for a fiction set in a viral pandemic when we have not even left our own in reality? We may have the answer very close with the premiere of Sweet Tooth: The Deer Boy on Netflix. Although it has not been given much hype, it is undoubtedly one of the most interesting titles that the platform has for this summer.

A mysterious and fulminant virus, massive contagions, the world in absolute chaos, search for a cure, masks, distrust of each other … The start of Sweet Tooth: The Deer Boy It runs the risk of throwing back viewers who do not want to submit again to images that have not yet left the news.

However, in this comic adaptation of Jeff Lemire edited by the label Vertigo from DC Comics (published in Spain as Glutton), something soon emerges that makes us forget our depressing reality to plunge into its own world: the birth of hybrid babies between humans and other animals. One of them is Gus, the boy protagonist of the story (played by Christian Convery), who was born with the horns and features of a deer.

When Gus came into the world, his father (the always great Will Forte) decided to take him away from the collapse that was unleashing and raised him completely isolated in the middle of nature while civilization collapsed. Nine years later, the tragedy forces them to leave their refuge and face a post-apocalyptic world where the law of the fittest rules and the survivors of the pandemic organize into dangerous gangs hunting the hybrid children as trophies.

This is how Big Gus appears in life Tommy (Nonso Anozie, to interpret a Xaro Xhoan Daxos on Game of Thrones), a lonely traveler who takes pity on the deer boy and promises to take him to Colorado, to a place known as the Reserve where he will be welcomed and safe. However, the trip will not be without dangers, which we will get to know throughout the eight episodes covered by the first season of Sweet Tooth: The deer boy.

Darkness with heart

Because it has Sweet Tooth: The Deer Boy so much potential to become one of the most loved series of the year? Beyond the adaptation of a cult comic like Glutton, the fact is that the creator of the series, Jim Mickle -Cinema considerably underrated despite a filmography dedicated to horror and thriller as neat as the vampire Stake Land (2010), the cannibal We are what we are (2013) and the bleak Cold in july (2014) – has proposed it as an appetizing candy for all audiences.

In addition to directing several episodes, Mickle shares with Beth Schwartz (Arrow) the position of showrunner of the series. His commitment has been to action and adventure with heart, without charging the ink in violent situations (it has an age rating for over 12 years) as well as in the peculiar relationship that is forging between the two protagonists of the story, Gus and Tommy.

Filmed for the most part during the pandemic in natural settings in New Zealand, with a soundtrack of luminous songs and a tender tone that is not afraid to step into more harrowing visions, Sweet Tooth: The Deer Boy has raised comparisons with the post-apocalypse of the saga Mad Max (particularly the third installment, Mad Max, beyond the dome of thunder) told with the tenderness of Bambi.

It sounds like a formula that Netflix would launch into without hesitation, and that’s how it was when the project, which features nothing less than Robert Downey Jr. And his wife Susan Downey as executive producers, he was homeless in Hulu, the platform that commissioned the adaptation in 2018. It was precisely in April 2020 when they reversed themselves and the project was sold to Netflix, where it became the eight-episode series released now.

Is the general public prepared to see a pandemic with many similarities to that of covid-19 so soon? If it is with the fantasy of a deer child in between, surely much more.
