TBILISI, June 4 – Sputnik. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia is intensively continuing its investigation into possible facts of a crime against inmates of a boarding school for children in Ninotsminda (Samtskhe-Javakheti region), the ministry said in a statement.

Investigations and procedural actions, including interviews with persons involved in the case, are carried out continuously. Minors participate in procedural activities in full compliance with the law and taking into account the best interests of children, the Ministry of Internal Affairs notes.

“As you know, the reason for the start of the investigation was the information disseminated by various media. Accordingly, the Ministry of Internal Affairs addresses all those interested in the topic of the said boarding house of the media, which may have interesting and necessary information for the investigation, cooperate with the investigation and provide information that will contribute to a quick and objective investigation. “, – noted in the statement of the department.

The investigation process includes the Department for the Protection of Human Rights and Monitoring the Quality of the Investigation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and the coordinators of witnesses and victims. Several minors have already been interviewed.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs actively cooperates with the Agency for the Regulation of Medical and Pharmaceutical Activities of the Ministry of Health of Georgia.

On Friday, the Agency for Assistance to Victims, Trafficking Victims and State Guardianship reported that six inmates of the boarding house expressed a desire to leave the institution, up to ten more children who are being transferred from the institution have been identified.

At the moment, the boarding house employs social workers and representatives of the Agency for the Regulation of Medical and Pharmaceutical Activities. In the interests of the investigation, psychologists will also be involved in the case.

A number of media outlets reported blatant facts of psychological and physical pressure on children – for example, that inmates are forced to crawl on their knees and are left without food as punishment.

The boarding house for orphans and children left without parental care is under the authority of the Patriarchate of Georgia.

The Public Defender of Georgia took control of the situation, but Nino Lomjaria and her staff failed to obtain permission to conduct monitoring in the institution.

The Ombudsman said that she is aware of at least four investigations in recent years in this institution. One of them, according to Lomjaria, is associated with the possible rape of a minor, and the other three – with possible cases of violence against children.

According to various sources, there are between 60 and 150 children in the boarding house. A number of media outlets claim that they tried to check information about the violation of children’s rights on the spot, but were not allowed into the territory.

In recent days, a series of actions have taken place in Georgia demanding that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor’s Office conduct a qualified investigation of the situation in the Ninotsminda boarding house.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, from 2016 to the present day, four criminal cases are being investigated in connection with this boarding house.
