Roland Garros woke up with startles this Friday after learning about the arrest of the Russian tennis player Yana Sizkova, 26, who said goodbye to the doubles tournament last night after falling with Ekaterina Alexandrova before Ajla Tomljanovic and Storm Sanders for a double 6-1.
According to the media ‘Le Parisien’ and the AFP agency, among others, the arrest is part of the investigation that a Paris court had been carrying out since October last year for organized fraud and sports corruption (active and passive). Sizikova would have fixed a match during the 2020 edition, postponed from May to October due to the pandemic.
The rigged match would have been a first-round doubles tournament, in which the Russian was paired with Madison Brengle; the rivals were the Romanian Andreea Multiple and Patricia Maria Tig. According to the French police report, in the fifth game of the second round, tens of thousands of euros were bet on the victory, in that same game, of the rival pair (Сизикова committed two double faults with his serve). The final victory in that doubles match was also for Mitu and Tig (7-6 and 6-4).
For the moment there has been no official reaction from the organization of the championship to this arrest, nor to the serious alleged acts of which the Russian athlete is accused.
