Plácido Domingo and José Carreras say goodbye to the Vienna Opera

The Spanish singers Plácido Domingo and José Carreras will perform for the last time at the Vienna Opera in galas scheduled for September and November of this year and with which this theater wants to honor two artists with whom it has had a close relationship for decades.

Two greats that have been very important to this house say goodbye“, the director of the Opera, Bogdan Roscic, announced to Efe questions during the presentation of the 2021/2022 season.

Domingo will bid farewell to the Vienna public on November 15 with what the Opera has called a “Spanish Night”.

It will have its own evening, a great farewell, with a Zarzuela gala. It is thus a return for him, his parents were artists in that genre. And so he somehow returns to the origin of his musical beginnings“, explained the director of the Opera.

In its program it is recalled that this Spanish genre of musical theater has never been heard on this stage, so the Opera assures that now “a circle will be closed” that began when Domingo made his debut here in 1967 with Verdi’s “Don Carlo”.

The two artists have always considered Vienna as “their city”, a relationship that in Domingo’s case translates into impressive numbers: 250 performances, 40 of them as conductor, and dozens of characters he has given life to at the stage of the Staatsoper.
