Cantaloupe, galia and green or honeydew are the three types of melon that are these days in question, after a notice from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, for its acronym in English). In varieties from Costa Rica, Honduras and Brazil, several institutions have already requested their exit from the points of sale while it is recommended not to consume this product whenever there are doubts about its origin.

And it is that up to twelve countries have detected diseases caused by salmonella in recent days. These are the cases of Denmark, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, in addition to Canada, where up to 200 cases have been detected, while Spain and the Czech Republic investigate incidents that could also come from the outbreak itself.

With regard to Spain, the two cases under notice occurred on February 28 and April 9, both in two babiesTherefore, it represents a date outside the summer season and when there is more consumption of melons from the three countries mentioned. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is already in charge of monitoring the outbreak in the European Union, while the 200 affected are investigated.

How to prevent salmonellosis?

For this reason, extreme caution has been requested as well as washing the fruit that is at serious risk of contracting salmonella at this time of year.
