Are you facing a person experiencing extreme anxiety, delirium, hallucinations or who is hurting themselves? Here are the reflexes to have.

The first reflexes

You are dealing with a person experiencing hallucinations, who suddenly manifests ideas outside of reality or who becomes violent towards himself or others, call the SAMU (15), who will then choose to travel directly or call on the firefighters. Then give the most precise information on the person’s condition.

The person is prostrate, no longer feeds, experiences extreme psychological suffering, endangers his health (driving while intoxicated, for example):

– If you think she will be receptive, you can offer her your help directly by accompanying her in an emergency reception service for a psychiatric consultation immediate (see the most suitable structures below).

– If you are afraid that you will not find the right words, you can enlist the help of another trusted loved one whom you consider to be in a better position to talk to him / her.

– If communication with the person is difficult and you fear an act, you can immediately seek medical help, possibly by calling the attending physician in the event that the latter has a relationship of trust with the person. Since the person may have to hurt themselves in the next few hours, it is necessary to call the SAMU (15).

Are you afraid of a suicidal gesture?

Do you fear the presence of suicidal thoughts in a loved one? It is important to talk to him about it. Often times, we fear that we will trigger the act by questioning someone with dark thoughts. On the contrary, do not hesitate to ask him the question, tactfully. Three cases can constitute a psychiatric emergency.

– If the person has thought about it and has a specific project in mind rather than something vague

– If the person has thought about it and sees no other option

– If she has a lethal means

– If she has attempted suicide in the past

In these situations, either she agrees to consult at once a doctor (attending physician or psychiatrist, or by going to a medical emergency center), or it is necessary to call the SAMU.

Either way, don’t try to reason with the person with dark thoughts, it would be like explaining to someone who is angry that they have no reason to be upset. It would be counterproductive. The best attitude to adopt is to listen without judgement.

Find the right structure

You can take the person to the nearest emergency department. A directory is available here.

Medical emergencies in CHU or CHR type hospitals. Most have a psychiatrist on duty, sometimes 24 hours a day. There are 32 in France. You can find the map of Regional and University Hospitals offered by the CHU network site.

There are emergency services specializing in psychiatry (CACs, reception and crisis centers and CAPs, permanent reception centers).

Here is a list by region of the main structures adapted in the management of psychiatric emergencies. To make sure you meet a psychiatrist on call, it is best to call before you go.
