Ann Wauters is missing in European Championship selection: "She prepares individually for Play"

Ann Wauters is not part of the Belgian selection for the upcoming European Basketball Championship. National coach Philip Mestdagh announced this from the Cats internship in Spain. However, this would not say anything about her possible participation in the Olympic Games in August.

The Belgian Cats are currently preparing for the European Championship that will take place from 17 to 27 June in Strasbourg and Valencia. For the first time since 2016, Ann Wauters will not be part of the national team.

“After consultation with the sporting staff and Ann herself, we have decided not to select her for the European Championships”, explains national coach Philip Mestdagh. “The intention remains to further prepare Ann for the Olympic Games in Tokyo on the basis of an individual program.”

“The choice not to take Ann with us was not an easy decision,” says Mestdagh. “The tough program this summer ensures that we keep a close eye on the workload of all our players. We have high ambitions and details are extremely important “This was also a factor in the decision-making process. Ann’s role as captain will now have to be filled by other players.”

My biggest dream is to continue to participate in the Olympic Games and I will take that focus with me in my further preparation

The 40-year-old Wauters reacts disappointed himself. “The disappointment is great. However, I have always respected sporting choices and I will continue to do so now. My biggest dream is to continue to participate in the Olympics and I will take that focus with me in my further preparation.”

“The fact that Ann will not be there at the next European Championship is an extra challenge for us,” says Emma Meesseman. “Ann is someone with a strong personality and a voice in the dressing room. We will miss her good example and have to take care of it as a group.”
