MEXICO CITY.- According to an analysis carried out on the effects of distance classes in Mexico, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) reveals that Mexican students lost during the confinement the equivalent of two years of schooling.
The IMCO details that before the health emergency, Mexicans reached an average learning level corresponding to the 3rd year of secondary school; However, today their knowledge reaches only the equivalent of 1st year of secondary school.
So far in the pandemic, at least 628 thousand young people, between 6 and 17 years old, have interrupted their studies due to the economic crisis caused for COVID-19. This implies a drop below the 2008 level in the percentage of young people attending school.
Explain that a decrease of this magnitude implies a 13-year setback in the level of school attendance.
Another consequence is a country with a population that has fewer skills, so it exposes two types of economic costs:
*At the individual level, workers will have less access to better paying jobs and this will cause the average student to lose 8% of your future annual income, which is equal to one month’s salary per year for the rest of your productive life.
*At the country level, it is estimated that in the next 80 years this phenomenon could cost Mexico an accumulated amount of up to 136% of GDP in 2019, which would imply stop producing up to 1.7% of GDP each year.
The IMCO states that, if they do not take forceful measures when returning to schools, “Learning losses put the future of an entire generation of students at risk.”
The institute ensures that the central objective is the educational response to the pandemic to recover the skills of students, and thus avoid that learning losses condemn them to precarious jobs when they enter the labor market.
