POLITICS – Proposals and visions that clash. This could be the summary of the televised debate between the seven candidates for the Hauts-de-France region, broadcast live on France Televisions and France Bleu Nord this Wednesday, June 2 for nearly two hours before the polls on the 20th and 27th. June.
Unsurprisingly, it was the two big favorites that were the most targeted: the outgoing president Xavier Bertrand, who admitted in conclusion that “we did not do everything well, we did not succeed everything”, one of the reasons for which he is representing himself; and Sébastien Chenu, his main opponent of the RN if we are to believe the polls and the uncertainties at the end of the first round depending on the mergers, maintains or withdrawals beyond 10% of the other lists.
“Suffer the contradiction, it is a debate”, intimated the second to the first. “We are the only ones able to beat the RN”, retorted Xavier Bertrand a little later.
The ex-LR was attacked over his health record. “Less than one euro invested per inhabitant over the entire term,” lamented Karima Delli, environmental leader of the only union list of the left in the whole country. It offers “an offer of care for each inhabitant within 20 km” and the hiring of doctors. “It’s more than three euros per inhabitant”, corrects the outgoing president who promises to “multiply by two or three the health budgets” of the region in the next term. “And why didn’t you do it?” Retort the competitors.
In fact, a strange alliance (of circumstance?) Was formed between the government candidate, Laurent Pietraszewski, and the green candidate. “As Ms. Delli said, you have divided the region’s budget by 5” on health, replies the Secretary of State for Pensions.
Sébastien Chenu preferred to focus on “disability”, mentioning one of his candidates “who will be the first regional councilor in a wheelchair” and who has worked on his “for accessibility” program.
Proposals and “cock fights”
Throughout the debate, Marine Le Pen’s candidate tried to soften his image as a far-right candidate. Alternating between a “You know me well!” addressed to his former colleague of the UMP, Xavier Bertrand, and a “Yes, but I left her”, when Karima Delli recalled that they were together at the UMP under Nicolas Sarkozy when 10,000 police stations were deleted. “Who added 10,000, it’s us!” Boasted the candidate of Emmanuel Macron, taken up by Delli in his argument against this security record.
The only woman among the candidates, Karima Delli wanted to go beyond the “cockfights” on security “which is not a competence of the region” and promised to make the fight against feminicides her “priority. ”.
On employment, all pointed to the results of Xavier Bertrand who preferred to promise the financing of the driving license, “a tax which does not speak its name”, at 90% for young people looking for a job and for parents who are raising their children alone. The former minister also defended the creation of “21,000 jobs”, “a figure which increases with each television program”, according to Chenu.
The young RSA, which she is proposing in the region on an experimental basis, will be Delli’s only attack targeting her opponent LREM, while she said her “shame that young people do not have their fill in our country” and that “The government was not up to the task by refusing to open it, even temporarily”. “We have to make lace, individualized responses”, replied Pietraszewski, who defends the “youth guarantee” and emphasized his 25 years of experience in business and his associative commitment. “Fortunately, the associations are there, yes”, almost thanked the green candidate with a big smile.
Bertrand and Pietraszewski met on several subjects, including the opening to competition of trains in 2023. “I am against”, replied Delli who made a plea for the night train from Calais, recalling his victory “Torn off” in Europe on the subject as chair of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee. “L‘one does not prevent the other, I want to tell Ms. Delli that I am listening with interest, ”replied the Minister. Politeness after politeness.
From there to consider an alliance in the second round if the RN wins in the first? Probably not. “We are in opposition to the RN”, simply replied Laurent Pietraszewski, asked about his intentions if he arrived in third or fourth position on June 20. “Some are obsessed with the idea of blocking the RN. I am obsessed with the idea of protecting your security, identity and employment ”, defended Chenu in conclusion. “I am breaking with these ulterior motives for presidential or politician games,” concluded the candidate from the left. The only one to attack Bertrand on his candidacy for the Élysée.
