Experts sure: Wolf couple at home in the Eifel - it was already on the prey

Düsseldorf / Monschau –

A pair of wolves has settled in the Eifel. The NRW Ministry of the Environment reported on Wednesday (June 2) about evidence of this.

  • Near Aachen: Wolf couple settles in the Eifel
  • Eifel wolf comes from Lower Saxony
  • Animals already killed five sheep

The territory of the pair of animals lies mainly in the Belgian part of the High Fens east of Eupen – but it extends beyond the national border to Monschau near Aachen, it said.

A wolf was sighted in Cologne at the end of May, roaming several parts of the city. In the Rhein-Sieg district there were appeals of hate against wolves sighted there.

NRW: Wolf and she-wolf in the Eifel form a couple

The male’s pack of origin from the Eifel is not known, the wolf comes from a pack in Lower Saxony, said the Ministry of the Environment.

The presumption that the animals have formed a pair has been confirmed by genetic testing of samples from dead sheep. On the night of March 24, 2021, the wolf and she-wolf killed five sheep together in Monschau.

The sheep farmer had been informed that he could apply to the Cologne district government for compensation for the wolf cracks.

“It is recommended that keepers of sheep, goats and game in the wolf area Eifel – Hohes Venn and in the surrounding buffer zone secure their animals with suitable fences so that they are wolf-repellent,” explained the ministry. (dpa)
