Gremco will leave University: Congress approved PL 6863 that seeks to clean up the debts of the clubs

This Monday afternoon, the Congress of the Republic approved Bill 6863, under the name of ‘Law to strengthen the economic restructuring of soccer sporting activity in Peru, which seeks to achieve economic sanitation and protect heritage of professional football clubs. He would punctually attack the cases of the University of Sports, Cienciano and Melgar de Arequipa.

With 91 votes in favor, 11 abstentions and none against, the Plenary approved, in the first vote, the replacement text proposed by congressmen Ricardo Burga and Walter Rivera, both from Popular Action. Now, this will pass into the hands of the Executive and, if there are no observations, it will enter into execution.

After the enactment of the law, the bankruptcy proceedings of the clubs submitted to competition will be provisionally suspended, as is the case of the Sports University, currently managed by Gremco. The well-known construction company will have to step aside to give its place to Sunat, an institution that will initiate an internal investigation to find out if there have been irregularities in the handling of the equipment in recent years.

The Bill proposes that “the insolvency administrators are removed and the Sunat is charged with appointing the provisional administrator, be it a natural or legal person, who is in charge of reorganizing the sports institution”.

Franco Salinas, spokesman for Popular Action, explained that it will seek to “form a high-level commission appointed by Congress to develop and propose a new legal framework that allows the financial recovery of the clubs, establishing a payment system or schedule.”

University of Sports has been one of the institutions most affected in recent years by the mismanagement of its administrations. This was evidenced by investigations carried out by Indecopi’s Supervision and Inspection Management.
