Cologne –

The big wheel of the Kipp showman family moves Cologne. Not just literally in the gondolas over the roofs of the city, but also figuratively. There was jubilation in February 2021 when it became known that after the station at the Chocolate Museum (June to December 2020) the Ferris wheel was to be next at the zoo. But then: standstill. Since Monday (May 31st) things have been moving again: Construction has begun, the start date has been set.

  • Ferris wheel at Cologne Zoo: Construction has started
  • The start date is June 5, 2021
  • The zoo and ferris wheel offer combination tickets

First of all, residents had rebelled against the new location in February 2021: The Ferris wheel should be too bright, too loud (55 meters high), further exacerbating the already tense parking lot situation around the zoo.

Ferris wheel in Cologne: construction at the zoo is underway, starting on June 5th

When that was resolved, the corona numbers rose. Again, the construction was temporarily off the table, due to the pandemic situation, initially no operating permit. The Ferris wheel at the zoo should have been in place from the end of March to the end of June, but the plan didn’t work out.

The Ferris wheel, here at the Chocolate Museum in September 2020, will be rebuilt at Cologne Zoo.

Since Monday it has at least been clear when it can finally start: The construction work on the large meadow at the zoo has started, and from Saturday (June 5th) up to 252 visitors can go on a ride on the Ferris wheel at the same time.

Giant Ferris Wheel Cologne: Unique views of the zoo and the city

The Ferris wheel offers unique views from the new location. Where can you meet the cathedral at eye level – and at the same time look at the head of giraffes, elephants and the like from a bird’s eye view?

Zoo board member Christopher Landsberg is delighted with the new attraction on the doorstep: “Overlook our exotic animal landscapes at a height of 55 meters – and at the same time let yourself be spellbound by the cathedral, the Rhine and the silhouette of the Bergisches Land. We are very happy to be able to bring the Ferris wheel here and to offer the people a highlight! The visitors can look forward to great views. “

The big wheel in Cologne is open seven days a week

It is not yet clear how long the Ferris wheel will finally remain there. That should also depend on the weather and the pandemic situation. However, about three months are being considered for the time being.

The zoo wants to convince the skeptics, who also criticized the new location from the point of view of the animals and in terms of sustainability, with good arguments: “Since the foundations were made using lightweight construction, the meadow in front of the zoo’s main entrance is not damaged. The Ferris wheel is operated in a climate-neutral manner from sustainably generated electricity and is almost noiseless, even at full speed. And since it is longer light in the evening, neither zoo animals nor residents are disturbed by the lighting of the ferris wheel, ”the zoo says.

From June 5th, the Ferris wheel will be open every day and run from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Sundays it is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to the usual single tickets, visitors will also have the option of buying combination tickets for admission to the zoo and a Ferris wheel ride.
