Colombia reported 23,487 new cases of covid-19 on Wednesday, the highest number of infections in a single day as a result of the third peak of the disease registered in the country.

“For this May 26 (…) 23,487 new cases,” indicated the Ministry of Health in its daily report. The highest number of infections in a day was not registered since last January 15, when in the framework of the second wave of the virus in Colombia 21,078 cases of the new coronavirus were recorded.

According to the ministry, the total number of infected people in the country since March 2020 (when the pandemic reached Colombia) amounts to 3,294,101.

The Ministry of Health highlighted that 97,872 tests were processed during the day, of which 48,991 were PCR and 48,881 antigens.

The majority of infections in the last 24 hours were in Bogotá (center), 8,168, in the department of Antioquia (northwest), 2,833, and in Valle del Cauca (southwest), with 2,164 cases.

Bogotá, with 924,265 cases at present, remains as the city with the highest number of infections and on red alert due to the congestion of the Intensive Care Units (ICU), whose capacity for covid-19 patients reaches 94.8 per hundred.

By department, Antioquia tops the list of infections, with a total of 526,190, followed by Atlántico (north), 268,893, and Valle del Cauca (southwest), with 262,104 cases.

For its part, the number of deaths in the last 24 hours reached 514 people, bringing the total number of deaths as a result of the virus to 86,180.

Although a good part of the deaths registered in the last hours corresponded to older adults, who suffered from medical preexistence that were aggravated by the virus, there was also the death of a 4-year-old boy in Bogotá (center) who suffered from basic diseases, as well like some young people under 30 years of age.

Colombia is currently going through the third peak of the pandemic, which, according to the health authorities, will increase for up to three more weeks due to the protests (with quite a few crowds) that have been maintained against the central government throughout the country since last April 28.
