Why is Geek Pride Day celebrated ?: 'Star Wars' is to blame

As every year, on May 25 we celebrate once again Geek Pride Day. A special holiday in which the public can freely celebrate their love for movies, series, video games, comics … And that has its origin in a galaxy far, far away.

Fan of Tolkien, Star Wars o Marvel, the blogger and author of the books Proud to be a geek Y May the Force be with you Germán Martínez, created in 2006 the Geek Pride Day. The initiative was born to create a community between the geek fandom and took as a point of reference the day of the premiere in Spain of Star Wars: A New Hope: May 25, 1977. Mr. Buebo, as he is also known on the Internet, managed to gather more than 300 people in Madrid. From then on, the event would become annual and would make its leap in 2008 to the United States.

Towel Day and Magnifico May 25

The anniversary date of Star Wars it also coincides with two other milestones. On the one hand, this same day the British author is honored Douglas Adams, author of the trilogy The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (published in five books). A literary saga in which a space highway makes the Earth have to be destroyed and only Arthur Dent is saved, with the help of the alien Ford Prefect and the advice that he first take a towel. A fabric that has countless uses and benefits. This is how it was celebrated in 2001 the first Towel Day, in which participants must wear a towel all day, get together with others who do and share it on social media.

The thing does not end here. May 25 also serves as a framework to remember the literary saga Mundodisco, of the famous Terry Pratchett. Comprised of more than 40 novels, this set is set in the flat world of Discworld. A place supported by four elephants, which in turn are supported by the star turtle Great A’Tuin. One more reason for the most geeks to solemnize this day.

The commemoration of these three tributes is an ideal day for people to focus on the creations of their science fiction and fantasy idols, with unique events dedicated to them. A pity that the pandemic this year has complicated it a little more.
