Panamanian athletes Juan Martínez and Ronnier Martínez satisfactorily fulfilled their participation in the U-20 World Weightlifting Championship that takes place in the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Yesterday, Monday, Ronnier Martínez closed the Panamanian participation in the World Cup event, ranking fifth in the total category of 61 kilograms, totaling 252 kilograms (110 in snatch and 142 in clean and jerk).

“Extremely satisfied. Mission accomplished because despite economic limitations, athletes give results and achievements. Let’s hope that one day they will give value to this effort ”, expressed José Manuel Ochoa, coach of both Ronnier and Juan Martínez.

Regarding Ronnier’s participation, Ochoa said that it was not the best day in the tournament, so they had to be conservative.

“The day was wet, the bar was slippery and several of the athletes were bleached, so we had to be conservative to avoid going blank,” explained Ochoa.

Ochoa added that the problem occurred mainly in the starting mode, so the decisions were wisely made so as not to make mistakes.

“The important thing is that it was in fifth place in the world in its category, in which points are added to qualify for the Olympic Games and now we have to wait for the sum to define the quotas,” explained the coach.

The first place in the 61 kilograms category went to the Italian Sergio Massidda with a total of 285 kilos (129-156), the silver for Alexey Drozdov, 282 (128-154) and the bronze one went to the Russian Vanik Mkhitarian, 265 (119-146).

Prior to Ronnier’s participation (Sunday), Juan Martínez won the bronze medal in the starter modality (102 kilos) in the 55 kilogram category, being the first medal achieved by Panama in a World Cup of this sport.
