Vizzotti and Nicolini traveled to Mexico to follow the AstraZeneca vaccine process

The Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, and the presidential adviser, Cecilia Nicolini, traveled to Mexico this Sunday to closely follow, together with the local authorities, the production and release of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which both nations prepared in the form joint. Argentina received this Sunday the first 200,000 doses of a total of 4 million that the laboratory promised to send before the end of May.

During their stay in that country, the officials will participate in meetings with Mexican health authorities, personnel from the scientific community and those responsible for the regulatory agency COFEPRIS (Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks) to work on a Latin American platform for preparedness and response. in public health, addressing the challenges of the pandemic and the health sector in general.

Argentina and Mexico produce the AstraZeneca vaccine together. The first country makes and the second packs. The Argentine government has been managing the landing of the doses it has already paid for for weeks. Of a total of 20 million doses, Argentina only received the 200,000 that arrived at the Ezeiza Airport this Sunday.

Once the visit to Mexico is over, Vizzotti and Nicolini will travel to Cuba to see, first-hand, the advances of the Abdala and Soberana 2 vaccines, given the possibility of collaboration between both countries with the aim of favoring access for the Argentine population. and from Latin America to these vaccines, as well as participating in the vaccine production chain.

The first week of May the two officials had held a Zoom with Cuban government authorities to advance the negotiation. They held a conversation with the Cuban Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal, to “exchange information” on the developments of the vaccines that are in a trial phase.

For now there are no definitions about the purchase. Nor on the certification of vaccines. And there are no set dates for the arrival of the doses. Until now, neither the World Health Organization (WHO) nor its affiliate in America, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), have given the “category of excellence” to the Sovereign 2 vaccine.

At the end of April Alberto Fernández had confirmed that he was negotiating the purchase of the Cuban vaccines Soberana 2 and Abdala with his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz Canel. “I was talking with the engineer Díaz Canel. Cuba has done a job that all scientists say is wonderful, very important, developing a vaccine called Sovereign, which has two versions, which is in phase 3 ″, assured the Argentine president.

Cuban scientists are working on four vaccine candidates against COVID-19: Soberana 1 (in Phase II), Soberana 2 (in Phase III) and Mambisa (in Phase I) and Abdala (in Phase III). A fifth candidate, Sovereign +, is a reformulation of Sovereign 1, intended for convalescents from the disease.

The Cuban prototypes are based on inoculating a protein from the coronavirus spike, the part that binds to the cells it infects, to produce an immune response. Sovereign 2, in which there are more expectations, also adds an immune response enhancer.

The latter is injectable, two application doses are foreseen, with intervals of two weeks between each one, in addition to a possible reinforcement. And it brings a novelty in the matter: it does not need freezers for its maintenance, a later attraction for the poor countries of the world.

This morning Vizzotti affirmed that the strict nine-day isolation, which began last Saturday, is a “temporary measure” whose results will be evaluated when that period ends and that “if necessary” “intermittent measures” will be taken before the second wave of Covid- 19.

The head of the Health portfolio indicated that “each measure is being analyzed according to the epidemiological situation” and justified the new restriction established by President Alberto Fernández by noting that “cases began to increase in the AMBA (metropolitan area of Buenos Aires Aires) and in many provinces in a worrying way ”.

“The measure is temporary, the impact will be evaluated after these nine days. Winter days are more risky and we need to monitor and, if necessary, generate intermittent measures, “he said in radio statements. In addition, he argued that “the health view is unanimous, the more circulation more cases” and added: “From the place of Health we have to transmit the recommendation measures that are very specific.”
