FOOTBALL – “We have to celebrate that, it’s a moment when we can finally get together”: braving the curfew, thousands of supporters celebrated this Sunday May 23 in the evening on the Grand-place in Lille the coronation of Losc, became champion of France for the 4th time in its history.
First prevented from reaching the Grand-Place by a large police roadblock, the first groups of supporters gathered around it, waving scarves and flags in the colors of their team, in a red halo of smoke and under the blasts of firecracker, noted an AFP journalist. “We are the Champions! We are the champions! ”,“ Who does not jump is not a Lille! ”Sang the revelers in the direction of the police, also targeted by boos.
After a detour through an adjacent street, the crowd, constantly growing, finally entered the Grand-place, unimpeded by the police, singing “We are the champions” and “Freed from desire” and dancing in a festive atmosphere. good-natured, to the sounds of a portable speaker, punctuated by fireworks.
The statue of a woman dominating the square on the “column of the goddess” was covered with a scarf in the colors of Losc. Across the city, motorists also took to the streets, all honking their horns. In the crowd, some wear masks, others not, but no question of physical distancing.
The prefect of the North, Michel Lalande, for his part called on Saturday the people of Lille to “live this moment of sport in complete safety, in a health context which is improving but remains fragile”, asking “everyone to continue to respect the all the sanitary measures in force and not to use pyrotechnic means on public roads ”.
