Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, in the Maternity May 25 60 deliveries of mothers infected with coronavirus were attended. The information was confirmed by the director of the hospital, Daniel Ovejero, who explained that as a referral center for this type of case they have special areas for attention.
So far, no mother who has given birth in the Maternity has died of coronavirus and there were no infections to newborn babies.
In dialogue with Catamarca/12, Ovejero pointed out that the “number of mothers who tested positive for covid-19 is variable. Sometimes there are seven and sometimes none, in total more than 60 positive mothers have been treated ”.
In this context, he said that as part of the protocol there are selective areas for covid in the Maternity. “We have a space for therapy and an operating room. And in respected labor rooms there is an exclusive for that, “he said. Maternity Provincial is the reference center of the province to receive infected mothers, which implies that if a pregnant woman infected with covid-19 was detected in departments of the interior of the province, she is referred to this care center.
Regarding the severity of the cases, the doctor explained that they were not complicated situations, since most were asymptomatic. Regarding the risks that they may imply for children, Ovejero assured: “Babies are not born with covid because there is no direct transmission from the mother to the child ”.
“At the time of breastfeeding, if the mother is infected, the baby stays with her and takes milk from the breast. The protocol says that the child must be with his mother like any other mother and maintain the necessary care, “he stressed.
In this context, he wanted to make an appeal to the population and recommend “what everyone is saying, whether from the national or provincial government. The vaccine is a very important thing but it is not everything. The vaccine will delay until we can have the necessary immunity, therefore we must control with prevention measures: chinstrap, compulsory social distancing, washing with alcohol or water, avoiding crowds and, fundamentally, having social and individual responsibility because that way we avoid contagions ”, he concluded.
On the page of Ministry of Health of the Nation there are recommendations for covid positive mothers, and for those who are breastfeeding.
“Breastfeeding plays a fundamental role in pandemics: it is capable of saving lives and making illnesses that may occur in children milder. Even if you have no suspicion or confirmation of COVID-19, sanitize your breasts and wash your hands very well before and after breastfeeding ”, they explain.
Meanwhile, and as Ovejero pointed out, they indicate that if the mother is a suspected or confirmed case of covid-19, she can continue breastfeeding. “Until now the virus has not been detected in the mother’s milk. Likewise, hygiene measures must be taken to avoid infecting the baby through contact, talking, coughing or sneezing. Wear a chinstrap while breastfeeding. If you take off the chinstrap, the baby must be more than 2 meters away from you and in the care of a healthy person ”, they conclude.
