“Knives Out” or “Between knives and secrets” is a mystery film written, produced and directed by Rian Johnson. The story follows the ‘whodunit’, which comes from the contraction “Who has done it?” (Who has done it?) And is a subgenre of the crime novel where the author offers the reader the clues to deduce the identity of the author of the crime. Some of the writers who explored this type of plot were Agatha Christie, Josephine Tey, SS Van Dine, and Ellery Queen.
The film features an all-star cast of all generations. In addition to Daniel Craig, we can see performances by Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and Katherine Langford. It received Golden Globe Award nominations and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars.
Regarding the sequel, there is no information about the story that will follow, but what is known is that it will have a cast that again includes Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc and actors such as Dave Bautista, Edward Norton and Janelle Monáe. The filming of “Knives Out 2” was scheduled for February 2020, but the pandemic stopped this. Filming is reported to start in June this year, in Greece. In addition, it was confirmed that Netflix acquired the rights to this franchise, betting on a second and third installment.
Secrets in the mansion
Harlan Thrombey (Plummer) is a novelist who made his fortune from crime novels. He invites his family to his Massachusetts mansion to celebrate his 85th birthday. Everything seems to be going well until the next morning the housekeeper finds him dead, his throat slit. Although the police believe it was a suicide, Detective Benoit Blanc offers his services to investigate the case and get to the truth.
Through the detective’s quirky interviewing tactics, we learn how relations between Harlan and his family became strained. He threatened to expose the deception of Richard (Johnson), husband of his daughter Linda (Curtis); he cut off his daughter-in-law Joni (Collette) because she stole from him for four years; he fired his son Walt (Shannon) from his publishing house and had a big fight with his grandson Ranson (Evans).
In a house full of lies, the moral compass of the story seems to be Marta (de Armas), a young migrant nurse who became the constant companion of the writer. Why does Blanc trust her and assign her as his assistant? The woman has an absurd, and somewhat comical, reaction to the lie. Every time he tries to hide the truth, he ends up vomiting.
Although the plot is committed to telling you “the truth” of the crime in the middle of the film, do not worry, here the interesting thing is not only knowing who killed him or how, but the sequence of circumstances, decisions and omissions that led to his death From the writer.
A look at the real
But the ingenious “Knives Out” It was not only interesting for critics for its elements linked to suspense or mystery, but for the small arrows it launched against some parts of American society. We witness a family that lives off the achievements of a patriarch and, even if they try to forge their own empires or create something thanks to their means, they always end up turning to Harlan’s money. Thus we see the son who owns the publishing house who seeks to get the rights to the novels, the widow of another deceased son and his granddaughter, who religiously collect child support checks or the eldest daughter, who claims to have created her company from scratch, but that, in reality, he did it thanks to a capital that his father gave him.
The film also makes a simple but no less penetrating comment on the power relations that exist between “the family” and “the service”. From how Ranson mistreats the housekeeper and everyone seems to criticize him – but nobody does anything to stop him – to how the family did not invite Marta to the funeral – although according to everyone they did want her to go.
They are not even afraid to touch on the issue of immigration through the nurse and her family, who came to Ecuador legally, according to the Thrombey. This situation becomes vital, since it will be one of the engines for Marta to try to hide some important facts.
“Knives Out” It is one of those tapes that captures you from beginning to end, but yes, you need to pay close attention to the dialogues, the actions of each character and the chronology of what happened to fully understand the outcome. That is, it is not one of the movies that you can put in the background to do other things. Without ever losing the humor or the eccentric -factors that make it fresh and fun-, we delve into the mystery behind a crime, but also into a critique of the social injustices of this society.
