With the atmosphere that is breathed in the great occasions, Peugeot has presented today to the press what will be the a benchmark for a new era for the brand, the third-generation 308.
We have not been able to drive it, but we have seen and felt in the first person to try to convey our first feelings, which could not be more positive. First because we have seen an elegant and sporty compact; second, because it has an exquisite and technological interior, and third, because it comes with hybrid mechanics without neglecting the traditional heat engines in diesel and gasoline, which still have a run.
The Peugeot 308 arrives to “fight” with an important competition between the compact, such as the Seat León, Ford Focus, Renault Mégane or Volkswagen Golf, but also to give a hit the table in front of the unstoppable SUVs. And it is that they may not be able to with them in size and trend, but in the rest of the sections, such as comfort, efficiency and dynamics, the compact ones are superior.
In any case, we are now facing the new 308. The front is completely blunt, with the luminous “fangs” that are beginning to be typical in Peugeot and a huge, unbroken grill – the license plate is underneath – that the new logo of the French brand also shows off in a big way. This renewed emblem is not a trivial question, since with it, and with the 308 itself, a new and hopeful story begins for Peugeot at all levels.
Also the profile looks longer and more aerodynamic, Among other things because the 308 has grown by 11 centimeters (4.36 total meters) compared to the current one and also because it is shorter and sharper. The rear, meanwhile, is characterized by a prominent bumper –At least in the GT version shown– and the LED headlights representing the three Peugeot claws, with a black stripe joining them from side to side, as we had already seen in the 208 and 508, for example.
The interior of the new 308 oozes technology and quality on all four sides in the highest-end version. Of the 11 cm more in length, half have been used to “Stretch” the wheelbase, and it shows in the interior, which is quite wide both in the front and rear seats, and also has a boot capacity of up to 412 liters.
How could it be otherwise, the i-Cockpit continues to set the standard in the cabin, but now redesigned and a little more open towards the passenger. The small-sized steering wheel and the digital panel (with a 10-inch screen) are kept on top, while in the center there is a new screen (also 10 ”) for the multimedia system with the aerators above. Under the main interface of the mentioned system there is a row of configurable touch buttons that act as “shortcuts” to preferred features.
It has also acted on the multimedia system, which has a handling and response more similar to that of the smartphones, and these can now be connected wirelessly, with the ability to link more than one via Bluetooth. Another improved functionality is voice recognition, which is activated by saying “Ok Peugeot”.
Two hybrid engines
In its beginning, the mechanical offer includes gasoline, diesel and, for the first time in the model, hybrids. Starting with these, there will be two options, one of 180 horsepower and another 225 hp, both associated with a 12.4 kWh battery and with a electric autonomy of approximately 60 kilometers, which is not bad at all. The energy recovery capacity ranges from 7 hours on a domestic socket to 1 hour and 55 minutes at a 7.4 kW point.
As for the thermal versions, in gasoline there will be a 1.2 PureTech block of 110 or 130 horses and in diesel a 1.5 BlueHDi also with 130 horses. The most powerful engines can be chosen with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Regarding the equipment, cutting-edge technology especially in safety and driving aids, with an evolved package of solutions for Drive Assist 2.0, in which the semi-automatic lane change, predictive cruise control and curve-based speed adapter. All this is coupled with, among many other things, the long-range blind spot system, a new parking camera, heated seats with massage function and even an air purifier for the interior.
Prices will be communicated in the coming weeks, since orders are scheduled to open in June and deliveries begin in September. The range of the new Peugeot 308 is structured around the finishes Active Pack, Allure, Allure Pack, GT y GT Pack.
