“In the case of having open bottles and not having the target population, it will be possible to vaccinate people of the same age or consider the next cohort in a descending way”, points out the norm.

What is the process after being vaccinated in an exceptional way?

When the dose is applied exceptionally, the vaccinator must schedule the application of the second injection and record the inoculation to record and formalize it. This is the protocol:

  • The institution that carried out the indicated vaccination, under responsibility, will give your vaccination card to the immunized person, programming the date of the second dose of the corresponding vaccine.
  • Likewise, health personnel should proceed with record the dose application in the system of vaccination information against COVID-19 provided by the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

Last week, the Minister of Health, Oscar Ugarte, ruled regarding the vaccines that are not used during the vaccination day. I affirm that no dose is “missed” since they are distributing and using the doses according to the number of people they summon.

“When you open the bottles where six doses come out, you have to use that bottle anyway. The bottles are being used according to the people who arrive, there is no waste. We are handling that very well. The nurses have a lot of experience with that. And therefore we are not losing vaccines, he remarked in statements for TVPerú.

What about thawed vaccines that are unopened?

Health Directive No. 133-MINSA / 2021 / DGIESP also establishes the “reassignment of vaccines” in case doses remain available due to low demand. The section specifies that when a vaccine is thawed, it lasts for five days (with a cold chain of 2 ° C – 8 ° C) and recommends using it within that period of time.

In this case, the available vaccines must be reassigned to the people included in the prioritized group of vaccination in execution (firefighters, members of the Red Cross, cleaning personnel, security personnel, serenazgo, etc.) and who are registered in the universal standard.

The Ministry of Health specified that the remaining balances are generated because a person fails to apply the dose at the vaccination site, does not attend the scheduled appointment or has a health condition that prevents them from being immunized.
