Anyone can have a fault. Nor are we going to shout to the sky every time a television collaborator makes a mistake without any intention of doing harm, but by a combination of misconceptions. Which is basically what happened to Alastair Campbell, although in his case those concepts that he united in his mind and live were death and Isabel II. And of course, his viewers were scared.
It happened this Wednesday, a day after his public reappearance. It also happened in one of the programs with the largest audience in the United Kingdom: the morning magazine Good Morning Britain, which had Campbell, political adviser to the Prime Minister between 1997 and 2003, as co-presenter and former spokesman for the Labor Party.
Since the resignation of Piers Morgan (who was rather invited to leave after having broken the record of complaints for his criticism of Meghan Markle), the ITV network program hosted by Susanna Reid invite temporary collaborators to co-host the space, with Alastair’s turn being the last three days.
On yesterday’s show, both presenters were interviewing ex-footballer and actor Vinnie Jones (Snatch. Pigs and diamonds) on grief over the loss of his wife, Tanya, in 2019. And as the subject of death is very recent in the UK, due to the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh, Campbell made out on his own and said: “We have already talked enough about Prince Philip after the death of the queen.”
As it could not happen otherwise, first the audience has been scared by the announcement but, realizing its error, from the program they have asked it to rectify. “I think I may have accidentally announced the death of the queen. I was referring, of course, to Prince Philip.”, has explained Campbell, to whom his partner has thrown a cape: “It gives me the feeling that people have understood exactly what you wanted to say”.
Of course, since the videos of the recordings of Alastair making mistakes were already running on the Internet, it did not take so long for those who have laughed at it as those who consider that something like this is unforgivable and they demand his resignation, a measure that has not been adopted by the program for now.
