The plenary session of the Barcelona City Council approved the project of municipal dentist three years ago, with the intention of offering this service, especially to vulnerable people, priced between 10% and 40% below market value.
More than 2,000 people have benefited from this model, which is now compromised by the ruling of the Contentious Administrative Court number 7, as a result of an appeal from the College of Dentists.
The judge warns that the consistory does not have “its own powers” over dental services, nor can it have them “by delegation”, since issues related to health are exclusive to the Generalitat.
But Ada Colau does not throw in the towel. The mayor explains that ‘Several alarmed people have written to us asking us if they have closed the Municipal Dentist that we started in Barcelona. It is important to know that the municipal dentist for vulnerable people is still fully in force ‘
Colau has been very expressive in a message on her Instagram account: ‘According to the judge we are invading powers, since the public dentist would have to do it the Generalitat. I would like the Generalitat to do so! “
So the mayor of Barcelona promises to go ahead with the battle of the municipal dentist, with an appeal to the sentence: As long as the Generalitat does not deal with this matter, from the City Council ‘will do everything possible to protect oral health’
The City Council has already opened two consultations for vulnerable people and ensures that it continues to work to make another a reality next year at more affordable prices than those of the private clinics in the city.
