Facing the renewal of the Mayor of Saltillo, as a sort of guide for the incoming authorities, VANGUARD asked city dwellers: what do you consider to be the biggest challenge or problem in urban development?
With 39 percent of the answers, the interviewees pointed in the first place to “growth without considering green or recreational areas”; followed by “overcrowding in homes ”, with 32 percent; and “disorganized urban growth,” with 29 percent.
But why is it important to plan green areas in cities? UN Habitat points out that “these spaces contribute to improving environmental conditions through increasing air quality, reducing the greenhouse effect and carbon sequestration ”.
Air pollution is reduced when dust and smoke particles, which come mainly from the vehicle exhausts are trapped by trees and vegetation, refers the organization.
“In the same way, trees can influence the degree of solar radiation, air movement and temperature, humidity and provide protection against heavy rains”, underlines the United Nations.
ACCORDING TO THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT REGULATION FOR SALTILLO
all subdivisions must give the municipality 15% of the salable surface free of charge, so that it can be used for green areas.
And the recreational spaces?
In accordance with the same ordinance, green areas must have: walkers, benches, fountains (where appropriate), children’s games and an urban gym with swing, elliptical bike, uneven bar and stair climber, among other devices.
