Fail suspension of PISA exam; is crucial information: OECD

Through a statement, the ONG and experts detailed their position, in which they point out that Mexico participates in the program PISA Since its inception in 2000, and the results of the evaluation have allowed us to find some structural limitations of our school system.

The analyzes have made it possible to focus actions for the states and subsystems with the greatest deficiencies and to overcome elements of inequity and exclusion.

He added that the closure of schools due to the pandemic destroyed the entire sector and in order to have a solid diagnosis of what has happened with the results of education in Mexico, it requires “post-pandemic efforts” with a variety of instruments that capture what happened. and allow “the effective restitution of the right to education of children and young people.”

The organization Educación con Rumbo regretted the decision of the Mexican government to cancel the PISA evaluation in its 2021 version, considering that “the last of the instruments to know the real level of students will be eliminated,” especially in the context of a pandemic which has forced education to take place at home.

The specialists who are members of this organization demanded that the government “remain in the PISA test and make known the evaluation plan for both students and teachers.”

They add that, from their trenches, they will promote instruments to evaluate the quality of education, from civil society and the international community.

In a statement with ten points, this organization assures that “it is serious that participation in the PISA test is canceled, but more serious is that there are no explanations or other alternative proposals to evaluate the evolution of our students’ learning”.

The organization highlighted that in 2018 the results of the test showed learning in mathematics, science and reading, that 35% of students in our country have not achieved sufficient learning in these subjects, when the average of the countries belonging to the OECD it is 13 percent.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, from its office in Mexico, clarified that it has not received “any information” regarding the alleged exit of Mexico from the PISA Test, and points out that, since 2000, no member country of that organization has passed the test.

In a statement, he mentions that he “views with concern” the information released about the possible suspension of Mexico’s participation in the standard test of the International Student Assessment Program.

“As the pandemic eroded education and seriously deepened the many deficiencies and inequalities of education systems around the world, this type of information has become increasingly crucial to ensure that the future of students and teachers had not been compromised. particularly of those who live in the greatest marginality, you cannot improve what you cannot measure ”, says the document.

He added that the test PISA it has “provided invaluable information on the quality and equity of education in Mexico and perhaps, more importantly, has focused public attention on the urgency of improving educational opportunities for the most marginalized communities.”

The coordinator of Mexico Rescue Mission, Leonardo García, regretted the decision of the Mexican government to cancel the country’s participation in the test PISA and he considered that it could be due to the fact that the results of education during confinement have been appalling and “they are scared” by the indicators with a view to the elections, and the revocation of the mandate.

He added that social organizations, in addition to calling on the government to rectify, could meet with the candidates for the 15 governorships that will be elected to try to make them aware that, once in power, educational evaluation mechanisms are installed in their entities.

When asked why a government could cancel an evaluation that allows improving education, I consider that “because education is a failure during the pandemic, and these indicators scare them and more if they are released immediately and, therefore, that affects them in the electoral process or in the process of revocation of mandate or in the process of 2024, because they are showing that Morena does not know how to govern ”.
