The current president of the Popular Party of the Valencian Community (PPCV), Isabel Bonig, will not finally choose to revalidate her position at the regional congress scheduled for before the summer. The regional management has convened this Monday the Regional Board of Directors for next Thursday, May 6, which must set the date of the organic conclave from which the new Valencian management will emerge. In addition, as reported by the PPCV through a statement, Bonig has transferred to the national leadership “that he will not appear in this process.”

The decision of the regional leader of the PPCV clears the way for the president of the Provincial Council and the PP of Alicante, Carlos Mazon, favorite of Genoa (headquarters of the national leadership of the PP) to relieve Bonig. In fact, the lack of support for the regional president has been a constant since Pablo Casado took over the reins of the PP in a process in which Isabel Bonig supported Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría.

Bonig, who is also the spokesperson for the popular group in Les Corts Valencianes, had stated until days ago that she would run for reelection and even asked calm to the “satellites of Genoa”, alluding to the support of Casado’s management in the Valencian Community. It was precisely in the Alicante Provincial Corporation, governed by the PP with the support of Ciudadanos, in which Mazón has cemented his organic counterweight to Bonig and even to the Coalition Council chaired by Ximo Puig, since 2019, as its predecessor did between 2015 and 2019, Cesar Sanchez.

The regional president of the PP He acceded to the position in 2015, in a context of strong upheaval in the party after losing almost all institutional power in the Valencian Community: the Generalitat, the provincial capitals and two of the three councils. In addition, he had to face the rosary of judicial processes for cases of corruption derived from the stages of Government of the PPCV.

In 2019, was the PP candidate for the Presidency of the Generalitat. The party went from being the first to the second political force of the Valencian Community and could not even add with Cs, which remained one seat from the PP, and Vox, so the second Consell del Botànic repeated the formula of the left pact.

Genoa: “It will continue to be key for the game”

The national leadership of the PP has thanked Bonig this Monday for his “work, effort and dedication”, and has assured that “will continue to be a key player for the party at the regional and national level “.

Source of the national PP have highlighted that Bonig took over the PPCV in July 2015, “at a very difficult time”, and that in these almost six years the regional president “has also stood out for her important opposition work, which has left exposed the mismanagement of the Valencian Government of Ximo Puig “.

From Genoa they have indicated that, after the provincial renewal in the Valencian Community, the regional congress will be convened to “renew and fine-tune the structure, and be prepared to win the next elections in the autonomous community and work so that Pablo Casado arrives soon in Moncloa. “

The same sources have finally indicated that it will be “the militants who will choose who will lead the party in the coming years.”
