‘The priest’

Year: 2017

Duration: 1 h 53 minutes

Elenco: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried y Cedric the Entertainer

Guest Reviewer: Fernando GC

Synopsis: A priest has an encounter with an activist and his pregnant wife, that’s when he begins to question his own beliefs.

I have realized that my favorite cinema is that of the A24 production company, it is an independent film company, because their films have powerful messages about the harsh reality of things, in addition to having exceptional photography. From my point of view, Ethan Hawke is an underrated actor and this movie is one of the most underrated movies ever made.

This film, in addition to being a critique of Christianity, is a modern look at Christ. What he really had to do, if he existed, what he lived, putting aside his faith in God to solve all his problems. Besides being one of the films most philosophical and attached to the reality of religion, each phrase, each scene, each thing on the screen has a purpose to provoke emotions in the viewer.

If you asked me to compare this gem of a movie, I would compare it to “Taxi Driver” and “The Last Temptation of Christ” for the themes it deals with. Break the stereotype of what would be a magical “meeting” with a god and that it is not just flowers and peace. This film is attached to the sad reality of today, the misinformation and ease with which we believe things without questioning if we are really doing the right thing, if it is worth what we would be willing to do for our faith with the beliefs that have.

Amazon Prime Video

Year: 2021

Season: 1 (10 episodes)

More and more horror anthology series are treading heavily on streaming platforms. Although it is inevitable to take “American Horror Story” as a reference, the list continues to expand thanks to “Marianne” or “The Curse of Hill House” and its sequels. On Amazon Prime Video they are also taking note of the trend, and since April 9, a horror anthology set in a residential neighborhood in California in the 50s of the last century is available on the platform “They”. This horror series created by Little Marvin seeks to travel through terror in the United States through different decades, with this first season titled Covenant, focusing on an African-American family that moves to an all-white residential neighborhood. The Emory arrive in this idyllic neighborhood of Los Angeles leaving behind a series of tragic events and there they find a welcome far from idyllic, since despite the fact that the segregation laws in California no longer exist, they continue to face racism social and violent situations. This situation in itself is enough for all kinds of horror stories, but also a series of evil and supernatural forces seem to follow the family, with which we find ourselves in a classic story of “there is something bad and dark in this home”.
