NASA is preparing a probe that will study the way our Solar System looks like never before with any Voyager. In 2012, Voyager 1 left the heliosphere to explore space and, in 2018, they sent Voyager 2, however, none of them have the ideal materials to view our planetary system from the outside.
To achieve this, the US space agency has proposed launching an interstellar probe that would advance exploration in interstellar space. Initially, this probe is expected to move 1,000 astronomical units away from the Sun.
Elena Provornikova, director of the heliophysics team of the probe at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory explains that “the interstellar probe will reach the local interstellar space where humanity has never been before.” With this idea in mind, Provornikova states that it will be the first time that we can “take a picture of the heliosphere from the outside and see what our Solar System looks like from that perspective.”
The project has not yet received a name and is in its early design phases. For their develpment, NASA has a team of more than 500 scientists and engineers who are investigating what kind of instruments they can carry on board and what kind of tests they will be able to carry out.
Among the experiments they are considering is the use of neutral atoms to take pictures of the heliosphere and examine the intergalactic environment in depth. In addition, they also plan the hypothesis of capturing some of the light from the background of the universe or a radiation that goes back to the origins of the universe. and that it cannot be captured from the Solar System.
If this project to carry out this mission goes ahead, its developers estimate that the probe could be launched within 10 or 12 years and that they would achieve their goal 15 years after that launch.
