Extremadura detects a case of infection by the Indian variant in Mérida

The infected arrived from another autonomous community after being in contact in an international master with a citizen of Indian origin

Arrival of international travelers at a Spanish airport.

The Junta de Extremadura has confirmed by sequencing the infection by coronavirus in its Indian variant of a person who arrived from another autonomous community between April 19 and 20, where he was doing an international master.

Since then, he has remained isolated in the family home at all times, the regional Executive reported this Sunday in a statement.

On the 20th he underwent a PCR in Extremadura, in which he tested positive, and he proceeded to his strict isolation, in addition to checking that his network of contacts was close to his family.

The person comes from a region in which he was taking an international master’s degree, which was held between April 12 and 18 and which was suspended by the organization after detecting a positive last day 16.

This person, in the epidemiological survey, began with symptoms on April 19 and in the clinical follow-up he declared that in the aforementioned training activity he had been in contact with a citizen of Indian origin.

His close contacts have been asymptomatic and he has had mild symptoms. The control PCR carried out on April 30 was negative.

Given this, the sample obtained on day 20 was sequenced and this Saturday it was confirmed in the Badajoz microbiology laboratory that it was an Indian variant.

Extremadura health authorities have reported what happened to the autonomous community of origin and next May 3 the sample will be sent to Majadahonda (Madrid), to the National Center for Microbiology, for the second and final confirmation.

The Board has appreciated the collaboration that the infected person has shown at all times. After testing negative in the PCE this person and his close contacts, the study will be completed with a serology that shows that the infection is past to proceed to its epidemiological discharge.
