This Thursday, Manuela Ferreira Leite looked at the debate around the fight against corruption and at the demands of university students who demand the end of tuition fees, in their usual comment space, on TVI24.
The TVI24 commentator started by looking at the situation of university students, confessing herself very concerned about the “non-reaction” of the Minister of Higher Education, since the country is going through a very complicated situation and it would be irresponsible to cut this source of funds. to Higher Education.
Students’ financial problems cannot be solved by reducing funding for higher education. Asking for an end to tuition fees is popular, but the consequences would be dramatic. I believe that Higher Education is fundamental to the country’s economic development ”, he noticed.
The former Minister of Finance also recalled that, like many public services, Higher Education is “underfunded” and that it owes its survival due to the existence of tuition fees. In that sense, Manuela Ferreira Leite considers it serious that the minister has not responded to the students’ wishes, leaving the air in the air that he may be considering this solution.
It also stresses that, regardless of disagreeing with the demands of the students, no one should have their academic life questioned due to financial shortages.
For financial reasons, no one should be prevented from continuing their studies ”, he stressed.
Regarding the debate around corruption, the commentator considers that this is a problem of collective ethical awareness and not a legislative issue.
If corruption were a problem of laws, there was no problem, it was already solved. Every time a case of corruption arises, a law will immediately be made. Then that law stays there, but apparently it has no effect. Then when another case comes up, there is another law ”, he explained.
For this reason, Manuela Ferreira Leite believes that the solution to the problem lies in instilling ethics and principles that should not be violated by people.
