Kia has started a new era and is going to enter it through the front door, based on what we have been able to verify with the EV6, for now in a static presentation that has allowed us see it for the first time in all its glory.
It is the model that inaugurates the E-GMP platform of the Hyundai Group for electric vehicles in Kia, base that will be the cornerstone of the new stage of the Korean brand. In fact, in the next five years Kia will launch eleven electric models, four of them based on the ones currently in the range and seven brand new.
When we have reached the meeting point of the presentation, the Kia EV6 already attracted attention from afar, in an adjoining room from which you could see its silhouette and size. And is that It is a car almost 4.7 meters long, 1.88 wide and 1.55 high. As we got closer, the figure became larger and more robust, with a rounded and slender front, a profile whose ceiling is lowering its height to the rear and a Very original rear in which the LED optics draw a double curve towards the ground to give an important sense of poise and width.
Seen in profile, the large tires stand out (19 inches in the case of this basic version, and available up to 21 inches), the short overhangs and the content hood size to make the most of the space inside, since the wheelbase is 2.9 meters.
Indeed, the interior is characterized by the vast space available, and as it lacks a central tunnel –the platform allows a very flat surface to house the batteries–, the sensation is multiplied, especially in the rear seats, which seem from a segment even larger than the “D” to which this Kia belongs. The trunk, meanwhile, reaches 520 liters of capacity, but there is another support front with another 52 liters (20 in the case of all-wheel drive versions).
In the passenger compartment, the avant-garde design of the front seats stands out, that are comfortable, the two 12.3-inch screens arranged in a curve for the digital panel and the multimedia system – standard in all versions -, and the “floating” center console where the gear selector is located. Also striking is the design of the steering wheel, which has paddles to manage the level of energy regeneration of the engine.
From 400 to 510 km of autonomy
The range of the Kia EV6, still in the reservation period but ready for orders since May (the first deliveries are scheduled for September), It contemplates three versions, although some are unfolded according to the battery and the traction system. A) Yes, the entry EV6 has a rear engine of 125 kW of power (equivalent to 170 hp) and a “small” battery of 58 kWh with the one who reaches the 400 km of autonomy (reference data, in the absence of final approval). Already with the 77 kWh battery, in the next step is the EV6 with a 168 kW (229 hp) thruster, which can travel 510 km on a single charge; to continue with the EV6 GT-Line with the same mechanics and more features, which “cuts” its autonomy to 475 km.
Higher up is the GT-Line with a motor on each axle, all-wheel drive and 239 kW (325 CV) of power, whose autonomy is 450 km, to find at the top of the range Kia EV6 GT as the protagonist, also with two engines, all-wheel drive and 430 kW (585 hp), which remains at 400 km of autonomy but with performance worthy of a supercar: acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.5 seconds and 260 km / h top speed.
For its part, thanks to 800 volt charging capacity that the EV6 supports, at an ultra-fast point it can go from 10 to 80% energy in just 18 minutes, and in just 4 and a half to have enough to travel 100 km.
High technology, competitive price
The other aspect in which the Kia EV6 excels is in that of technology. In addition to the 12.3-inch digital displays mentioned above, It has Head-Up Display with augmented reality, Meridian audio system with 14 speakers and surround sound, and of course a wide assortment of driving aids. These include elements such as the safe exit system of the car, the state-of-the-art highway driving assistant and the Remote parking assistant, with which the car parks automatically with the driver controlling the maneuver from outside.
All in all, the Kia EV6 is an electric car. provided with a “Zero” label from the DGT that surprises and is going to surprise very pleasantly, more considering the competitive starting price, since it can be purchased from 42,200 euros with brand discounts, to which should be added the government aid in the versions in which it is possible to apply it.
