Polesitter Stoffel Vandoorne received bad news just before the start in Valencia: due to an administrative error by the team, he was pushed from 1st to last place on the starting grid.
In addition, dark rain clouds had appeared over the track after qualifying. Due to a mist of splashing water, Vandoorne had to start a catch-up race, but that did not stop him. In no time he drove around in 14th place.
But bad luck continued to follow Vandoorne: he flew into the gravel and hindered Müller when he got back on the track. After a time penalty of 5 seconds, the 14th place turned out to be the highest possible.
But the chaotic rain race took its toll: the five interventions of the safety car had demanded a lot from the battery. In the final lap one after the other car came to a standstill. World champion Antonio Felix da Costa, who was in the lead throughout the race, saw Nyck de Vries rush past.
Teammate Stoffel Vandoorne had also saved his battery better. He crossed the line in 5th place, but saw two more cars in front fall out disqualified. To his own surprise, our fellow countryman still appeared on the podium.
Stoffel Vandoorne couldn’t believe his eyes. “I am very surprised,” he stammered during the podium ceremony. “I’m not supposed to be here. It was a very intense game.”
“My pace during the race was good, but it turned out to be the right choice to save energy. That left me a little bit at the end. Formula E is really crazy. It’s great to be here.”
