POLITICS – They take the pen. In an open letter published in the form of a column by the ultra-conservative weekly Current values, about twenty former generals, retired or struck off from the French army for their political activities, call on the “governors” to “imperatively” show “courage” and “honor” to “eradicate” the dangers which according to them roam France.
First subject cited: “Islamism and the suburban hordes” which “lead to the detachment of multiple plots of the nation to transform them into territories subject to dogmas contrary to our constitution”, in the words of these signatories who for a certain many of them have already been invested by the National Gathering in various local elections.
In their letter, made public on April 21, the signatories also attack the supporters of a “certain anti-racism” which would have the sole purpose of “creating on our soil unease, even hatred between communities” and castigates, in passing, the attitude of the executive in the crisis of yellow vests.
But above all, these retired generals, joined by “a hundred high-ranking officers and more than a thousand other soldiers”, according to the count of Current values, multiply the sentences in the form of warning towards the power in place. And this a few days after the call to insurrection of Philippe de Villiers, already published – in length – by the weekly.
Marine Le Pen wants to convince them (if this is not already the case)
“Do not forget that, like us, a large majority of our fellow citizens are overwhelmed by your dawdling and your guilty silences”, write in particular Christian Piquemal, Gilles Barrie, François Gaubert and the other signatories, before planning a little more, later “an explosion and the intervention of our active comrades in a perilous mission to protect our civilizational values”, if nothing is done to go in the direction of their text.
All without hesitation, to raise the specter of a “civil war”: “we see it, there is no longer time to procrastinate, otherwise, tomorrow the civil war will put an end to this growing chaos, and the dead, for which you will bear the responsibility, will number in the thousands. ”
So many words, to say the least offensive, which apparently made Marine Le Pen want to convince these soldiers. In a column, also published by Current values, the president of the National Gathering explains “subscribing” to their “analyzes” and “sharing” their “affliction”, “as a citizen and as a politician.” “Gentlemen generals, join me in the battle for France”, she launches in particular in the middle of an avalanche of compliments, taking care however to specify, at the end of her answer, that this “battle” is “Political and peaceful.”
For Florian Philippot, the former right-hand man of Marine Le Pen, today slayer of “coronafolie” as patron of the Patriots, this is a “great initiative.” Others, like the MEP RN Jérôme Rivière or the mayor of Perpignan Louis Alliot hastened to share the generals’ text on social networks, as a form of assent.
The left stunned
Not surprisingly, the reaction is not at all of the same nature on the other side of the political spectrum. And that is to say the least. The left, through the voices of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Benoît Hamon or Pierre Laurent displays its consternation after this platform which he considers to be a barely veiled call to insurrection.
“Staggering declaration of soldiers arrogating to themselves the right to call their active colleague to an intervention against the Islamogauchists. It is time to mobilize to defend the values that these people trample on ”, writes for example this Saturday April 24, the leader of rebellious France, presidential candidate on Twitter. Before adding, in a second message: “without doubt the national prosecutor’s office will take up the call for sedition of the army published in Valeurs Actuelles under the signature of 100 retired soldiers.”
Same indignation for the rebellious deputy Éric Coquerel. “The soldiers call for a witch hunt, an eradication, to defend ‘civilizational values’ against the Republic, it ends with a threat of civil war, Le Pen salutes these factious apprentices and? Nothing. Shall we wake up? ”Writes the elected representative of Seine-Saint-Denis on social networks, when Pierre Laurent“ solemnly requests that the newspaper Valeurs contemporaine and the 20 generals who signed a call for military intervention be prosecuted and condemned by Justice.”
As the former boss of the PCF, Benoît Hamon, summons the history and the memory of the “putsch of the generals”, before pointing out the silence of Florence Parly, the Minister of the Armed Forces, of the President of the Republic or of his Prime Minister in front of to what he calls an “explicit threat.”
Because if the platform is initially signed by retired generals, for some already identified in the bosom of the extreme right, like Christian Piquemal, the timing surprises or at least questions. Their text was actually published by Current values on April 21, sixty years to the day after the attempted “Algiers coup”, when four five-star generals, opposed to General de Gaulle’s policy in Algeria, took up arms. The end of the Gaullist “continuity” and “heritage” at the National Rally?
