Pfizer is preparing “for the summer” a version of its anti-Covid vaccine that is more diluted and capable of being stored for months at the temperature of a normal refrigerator, the chief executive of the pharmaceutical company announced today.
In an interview with the French news agency AFP, Albert Bourla explained that the new version aims to facilitate its use and storage, which currently forces it to stay in an environment of -70º centigrade.
“We are working on a formula, much improved, with which the vaccine will be supplied already diluted and ready for use,” he said, adding that this new version “could be stored for two or three months in a refrigerator, [à temperatura] two to eight degrees, plus two to three months in a conventional freezer. ”
We think we can have the new version this summer”, He said.
Pfizer is also trying to modify the current formula to make it easier to use.
We are trying to see if we can extend your refrigeration time by taking the vaccine from a super-freezer at -70 degrees and placing it in a classic refrigerator at -20 degrees for a month”, He said.
At a time when two of the best-selling vaccines in the world – AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson – have suffered limitations and even suspensions due to some cases of blood clotting in people to whom they have been administered, the chief executive of Pfizer is confident in the effectiveness of its formula.
I am optimistic about our ability to control”The variant of covid-19 detected in India, he said.
We already have data on the ‘British variant’, which is for example prominent in Israel, and the vaccine’s effectiveness is 97%. In South Africa, against the ‘local variant’, it is 100% effective. And data from Brazil shows that it provides very good control over the ‘Brazilian variant‘”, He affirmed.
“We have developed a process so that, as soon as a variant is of concern, we can have an effective vaccine in 100 days”, adiantou Albert Bourla.
The Pfizer official also said that he is negotiating with the European Union to sell another 1.8 billion doses of his vaccine.
“We will conclude, in the next few days, a new contract with the European Union” e, “sand if we succeed, we will be able to produce all doses here in Europe we will be able to produce much more than the volume of this contract”, He guaranteed.
“In total, we should be able to produce 2.5 billion doses this year and exceed 3 billion next year. Europe, with its experts linked to new technologies, is the ideal environment”For this advance, he concluded.
