This April 23, the protest voices will sound far from the Villalar de los Comuneros campaign. If not too long ago it was the vicinity of the Congress of Deputies that heard the tolling of bells against the depopulation of areas of Spanish territory like this one, this time it will be the Plaza del Callao in Madrid that will be chosen to launch a new cry for equality between territories.
The protest platforms “Burgos asks for a step”, “Soria ya” and “Jóvenes de Castilla y León” have called a rally in the central square of the capital of Spain.
This act, which is organized on Castilla y León Day, is intended to demand solutions to the current serious situation of population loss and shortage of job options, especially in provinces such as Soria, Ávila, Palencia and Zamora.
Juanjo Álvarez, spokesperson for the Youth of Castilla y León, assured during his visit to the program “Hoy por hoy Zamora y Benavente” that the protest is “the only thing” that groups like his have left, and that they will try to maintain the pressure on public administrations “to end this population drain that is creating the breeding ground for Castilla y León to become the largest open-air nursing home in the world.”
The youth organization recalls that population estimates in the Autonomous Community estimate that it will lose an additional 240,000 inhabitants in the next 15 years.
